The demons regroup

Tanjiro beheads three of Hantengu's Emotion Demons, with Genya taking care of the fourth – but the demons incontinently begin to regenerate. snappily putting away Genya's ghastly appearance, Tanjiro realizes that the four Emotion Demons aren't their true target. A fifth demon must be hard.

Genya angrily tells Tanjiro that he wants to be the one to take down an Upper-Rank demon so that he can become a Hashira. Eyes bright and clear, Tanjiro tells Genya that he understands his dream and that he and Nezuko support him in making it come true.

The Mist Hashira is immobilized

Meanwhile, Tokito is still trapped inside Gyokko's water vessel. The Mist Hashira floats upside-down inside it, unfit to pierce through the sides of the bubble with his brand. Indeed even though he can't breathe or move, Tokito remains calm. The Upper-Rank demon taunts him.

Tanjiro guides Genya to the fifth demon

Through his supernatural sense of smell, Tanjiro pinpoints the position of the fifth demon and directs Genya to find him. The Kamado siblings keep the Emotion Demons engaged to give Genya time to search for the dark timber.

As Tanjiro shouts directions, Genya looks down to see a bitsy, mouse-sized Hantengu. To his shock and frustration, his blade can't pierce the bitty demon's skin and his pellets have no effect.

Genya remembers

Detracted by the fine demon, Genya is too slow to reply to an attack from before. As Sekido strikes at Genya's head, the youthful Demon Slayer's life flashes before his eyes.

Genya was one of seven children; Sanemi, who would later come to the Wind Hashira, was the oldest. Their father was a cruel sluggard who had passed down, but their mother was a kind woman who worked hard every day for her kiddies. One night, she didn't return home from work. Sanemi went out to search for her. While he was gone, a demon burst into their house, killing everyone inside except Genya. Sanemi dived the demon through the window and into the light of the daylight. Genya was shocked to see it was his mother, converted into a demon, and tearfully predicted Sanemi of boggling her.

Tanjiro takes off

Tanjiro snaps Genya out of his memory and saves his life at the last moment. The brash Demon Slayer returns the favor, taking massive damage from another demon attack so that Tanjiro can search for Hantengu. Tanjiro runs off into the forestland, and Genya faces Aizetsu.
